〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Chloe Decker
CHARACTER AGE: 36
SERIES: Lucifer
CHRONOLOGY: The end of Season 4
CLASS: Hero - probably eventually Registered, but she'll start out Unsettled because SHE HAS SUSPICIONS
HOUSING: I'd love for her to end up in Jeopardy because it's weird and her life is weird. Also with random roommates!

BACKGROUND: Wiki.

PERSONALITY:

Hard-nosed and reserved, Chloe Decker can easily be described as lawful good. Her priority is justice, and she remains determined regardless of circumstances to uphold the law and always go by the books. Sometimes, this can cause conflicts with those around her, especially when it comes to Lucifer, who often rebukes the law to pursue his own sense of justice. Her morals also cause her to be inflexible and sometimes overbearing, which makes her butt heads with Lucifer. She knows now he is the Devil, and she thinks she can "fix him" by encouraging the good side of him, forcing him to pursue more virtuous endeavors. That said, Chloe sees the best potential in people which allows her to constantly hope for better in others and giving her a vast ability for forgiveness.

She is also incredibly stubborn and can be prideful. She often feels like her way is the only right way, and while the show frames this as a good thing by presenting her often as the moral compass to help guide the other characters, it can also be frustrating for her when others don't have her back. The disillusion of Chloe's marriage and many of her conflicts with Lucifer arise from betrayals based on her stubbornness to turn her back on the right and true way, and over time she is forced to accept that while not everyone can look at the world the way she does, it doesn't mean she has to doubt her own worldview and priorities, either.

Chloe also suffers from a lot of self-doubts and low self-esteem. Her mother's expectations of her when she was growing up still inform the way she looks at herself, and while she rejected her nearly pre-ordained life as an actress to instead pursue a career in law enforcement, she still often is very lost and unsure of herself. She is socially awkward and sees herself as boring. She is also very lonely, and having suffered multiple betrayals of people she has cared for--her ex-husband, her ex-fiance, and Lucifer--has a severe and clear effect on the way she looks at herself. She often tries to attempt to force herself to be someone she thinks she wants to be, which is how she winds up engaged to a man she doesn't actually love. As time goes on, she starts to accept that she simply is who she is, and learning to love herself is constantly a journey for her.

It's also Chloe's doubts that turn her around in season four, when she finally learns that Lucifer is truly the Devil. The way she feels about him battles against her understanding of his role in theology and the evil he has seemingly brought into the world. Distancing herself from him gives her an objective view of the situation which encourages her black and white world view to rear its head, putting her in a position to betray Lucifer in order to save the world. However, when she spends time around him again, she is reminded of how she feels about him and who he really is and finds that she doesn't have it in her to turn her back on him. However, attempting to accept Lucifer also forces her to confront her own outlook of the separation of good and evil and confront the fact that not everything is so clear cut. This is what finally drives her to encourage him to forgive himself, and with that, she is also able to accept all parts of him - the devil and the angel. Instead of being terrified of who he is, she is able to be proud of who he has become.

It's really Chloe's compassion and empathy that drives her every choice. Although she often seems inflexible and demanding, she feels for other people very deeply. It's what makes her such a good detective, but it also makes her a good friend to those around her. Even when she is lost and confused, her understanding and awareness of her own struggles and the struggles of those around her give her perspective and helps her learn quickly from her mistakes. Although she hits rock bottom in season four while she struggles to accept all of the things she learned, and she makes horrible mistakes along the way, in the end, her capacity for love always overcomes her fear.

POWER:

MANIPULATION IMMUNITY: Just like in canon, Chloe is unaffected by Lucifer's powers of persuasion and desire exhibition.

VULNERABILITY INDUCEMENT: Chloe's presence causes vulnerabilities to become apparent in others. This power can manifest in a variety of ways; it can present in a manner as small as someone being compelled to open up to her emotionally, or more overtly by causing clear disadvantages by depowering or weakening others. This power is an expansion of her canonical ability to cause Lucifer to become mortal in her presence. Chloe's compassion and empathy influences this ability, and she will find it easier to induce vulnerability in those whose weaknesses she knows the best. While she won't be able to control it very well at first (giving the opportunity for her to accidentally target those around her), over time she will develop the ability to meter it and, essentially, turn it on and off. She also must be in fairly close proximity to the other person in order for the power to take effect - she cannot do it over long distances, video calls, etc. Moving too far away from a target will also cause her powers to lose efficacy.

LIE DETECTION: Her ability to detect lies is based on recognizing tells and empathy. While big lies will be obvious to her, she will encounter some problems when it comes to differentiating between small lies and secrets, and she may experience subconscious blocks around people that she trusts. Incredibly skilled liars, people who don't know they are lying/have been brainwashed, and characters with multiple identities may be immune to her abilities.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

So... What are your thoughts on ghosts?

[ Chloe isn't really fond of addressing the imPorts at large--anything that puts too much attention on her is always something she shies away from--but this is the kind of thing that she needs advice about. ]

I mean, I've seen some really weird stuff lately. And we are in some parallel universe with superpowers, so it's not all that out there, right? Or is it? Because I'm at the point where I don't trust my ability to separate what I think is going on from what is actually going on. I don't know, maybe the nuclear radiation is getting to me.

[ She doubts it. Chloe looks like she's about to turn the camera off, but then she stops. ]

Actually, while I'm here, does anyone have any pointers in getting that weird church group to stop dropping their spider edition of the Watchtower on my front porch? Ghosts I can deal with, but this? This is creepy.

FINAL NOTES: I am looking forward to hopefully bringing Chloe and her weird neuroses to all the people in MoM!
